This on-going series explores organized chaos through pattern and repetition. A fraction of each composition is the basis for the whole. These fractions, or smaller compositions, repeat themselves: in regular grids; side by side with regular turns; or side by side with random turns; and sometimes layered. Each fraction lends itself to infinite combinations. The series extends from a study of Islamic tiles.

Fences:
The twelve 'Fences' come from a single drawing. I was using up various media as a means of tidying the studio and experimenting with impulse mark-making on thick paper. The piece wasn't coming together, so I laid it aside for almost a year. During another recent studio cleaning I came across it and almost threw it away. However, as I looked it over, I felt drawn to the parts, if not the whole. So, I cut it into 12 equal pieces and they suddenly made sense.
Ginger's Alphabet:
This 13-piece set, (half the alphabet), comes from hand-made alphabet flashcards given to me by a kindergarten teacher who was cleaning out her closet. The paper was exquisite. Each composition extends from the single letter on the paper. Glitter seemed appropriate.
Permanent Product Series:
These have layers of medium fused to the paper, creating skins that are peeled back and rearranged.

This is a series in progress exploring the transformation of one artwork to another; of one artist to another. I recently acquired several hundred sheets of 23 x 30" paper, most of which have 18 x 24" plates printed on them. The work is traditional: landscapes, city-scapes, boats/sea-scapes, still-life, some figure, and architectural. Some are unfinished, others are offset. The paper looks to be several decades old, and would have been thrown out.
I'm drawing over them, pulling out existing elements and details, adding my own, and covering the rest. I change the orientation of the compositions as I work, creating new spaces, objects, and figures, using charcoal, pastel, and acrylic house paint.
I do not start with an end in mind; each piece evolves in the process.

The Weavings Series presents another way to incorporate chance into the art process. These pieces are originally ones that I've either grown tired of or that never quite worked in the first place. I cut them into strips, toss them in a pile and pull pieces randomly to weave together.
