I am interested in the environment and its contingencies that influence both art making and viewer behavior. I like to play with parts and wholes, arranging and rearranging parts into into new “environments”. The work starts with something tangible: a messy desktop, mundane materials, a still life, figure or interior. These translate onto the surface, often multiple times while the canvas, paper, etc. is turned and reoriented. My challenge, then, is to find a balance between chance and planning, between overarching rules of formalism and context-specific contingencies of the art process, between impulse and thoughtful decision making.
